Gennady Golovkin is a professional boxer. As of December 2022, he holds the IBF World Middle, IBO World Middle, and WBA Super World Middleweight titles. He is known by his nickname GGG or ‘Triple G’. The Ring magazine ranked him as the best pound-for-pound boxer from September 2017 to September 2018. BoxRec also ranks him as one of the best active boxers as of December 2022.

Gennadiy Gennadyevich Golovkin (Геннадий Геннадьевич Головкин) was born on April 8, 1982, in Karaganda, Kazakhstan. He currently resides in and fights out of Los Angeles, California in the United States of America. He stands 179 cm tall and has a reach shorter than his height at 178 cm.

He is of Korean and Russian descent and he has a twin and two older brothers. He started boxing at eight years old with the encouragement of his older brothers. He entered his first gym when he was 10 years old.

Golovkin moved to Germany in 2006 and to the United States in 2013 to help further his boxing training. He speaks Kazakh, Russian, German, and English.

Career

Golovkin turned pro in May 2006. His first professional fight was against Gabor Balogh. It was held in Burg-Waechter Castello in Dusseldorf. Since turning pro, he has had 45 fights, losing only twice and one match ending in a draw.

GGG won his first professional title in July 2009. It was the vacant WBO Inter-Continental Middleweight title. He won it against John Anderson Carvalho de Souza. In August 2010, he picked up the WBA Interim World Middle title after he defeated Milton Nunez.

In December 2010, he won the WBA World Middle against Nilson Julio Tapia.

He successfully defended this title nine times from 2011 to 2014. At that time, he had picked up the IBO World Middleweight title. In July 2014, he won the WBA Super World Middleweight title after he defeated Daniel Geale.

In October 2014, GGG picked up the WBC Interim World Middleweight title. From February 2015 to May 2018, he managed to successfully defeat his titles and also added the IBF World Middleweight title to his name.

In September 2018, he lost to Saul Alvarez and he lost his WBA and WBC titles. In October 2019, he won the IBF World Middle and the IBO World Middleweight titles. He defended both titles in December 2020 against Kamil Szeremeta. In April 2022, he won the WBA Super World Middleweight title after beating Ryota Murata.

In September 2022, he had his second official loss. It was to Saul Alvarez. Titles on the line for that fight were the IBF World Super Middle, WBA Super World Super Middle, WBC World Super Middle, and the WBO World Super Middle.
