Eleider Alvarez is a Colombian boxer, who formerly held the WBO light-heavyweight in 2018 and 2019. At a very young age, Alvarez already showed interest in boxing, and his mother is fully supportive of his dream. However, his mother died when he was 14 years old, and that's when he decided to pursue boxing. As of January 2021, he is the world's Top 8 best active light-heavyweight according to the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board and Top 10 by the BoxRec.

His amateur career started in 2006 when he faced Hamilton Ventura, and won the match. Following his success against Ventura, he defeated southpaw Julio Castillo and Yusiel Napoles. However, when he joined the 2007 World Championships, he fell short of Ramadan Yasser. He also represented his country at the Olympic qualifying tournament, however, he was beaten by Julio Cesar la Cruz.

Alvarez was 25 years old when he made his first debut as a professional boxer. His first fight was against Jesse Sanders, where he became the late replacement for Alvarez's original opponent, Kareem Chartrand. Alvarez won the match via technical knockout in the first round. In 2010, Alvarez has to go back to Colombia because of Visa issues. Luckily, in 2011, he returned to the ring to face Ernesto Zamora at the Bell Centre.

In February 2013, his promoter Yvon Michel had announced that Alvarez will be returning to the ring to fight against veteran boxer Nicholson Poulard. Michel also announced that the WBA NABA light heavyweight title is at stake, and either Alvarez or Poulard has to win to claim the title. Fortunately for Alvarez, he stopped Poulard on the 3rd round.

His recent fight was with Michael Seals in January 2020, where Alvarez sealed his opponent with a powerful overhand right on the 7th round, and Seals wasn't able to get up since then. In August 2020, he fought against Joe Smith Jr. who knocked over Alvarez in the 9th round. After his defeat, there's no lineup yet for his next fight.

Alvarez has a daughter named Ayda Eliza, which he named after his mom. He currently lives in Laval, while his wife and daughter are in Colombia.
