Mairis Briedis is a professional boxer from Latvia. He used to play as an amateur boxer on the Latvian National Team and he has won the gold medal three times at the Latvian National Championships. As of late 2021, he has had 29 professional fights, winning 28 and losing just one. His only professional loss came in the hands of Oleksandr Usyk in 2018. The bout was held in his hometown of Riga and was a unanimous decision.

He currently holds the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and Ring Cruiserweight Title. He has also held the Cruiserweight title for World Boxing Council (WBC) and the World Boxing Organization (WBO). BoxRec ranked Briedis as the best Cruiserweight player in the world in October 2021. He was also ranked the same by The Ring magazine.

Mairis Briedis was born on January 13, 1985, in Riga, Latvia. He stands 186 centimeters and he has a reach longer than his height at 190 cm. He still currently resides and fights out of his hometown of Riga.

Before being an amateur and later on a professional boxer, Briedis served as a police officer in the Latvian State Police.

Early Career

Mairis Briedis turned pro in 2009. His debut fight was against Raulis Racilauskas. The fight was held in Hansa Skola in Riga. He won via unanimous decision. He followed that with another win in 2010, against Gabor Zsalek. That was won via Technical Knockout (TKO). He followed this with a string of wins.

International Career

Until 2013, most of Mairis Briedis’ fights were played in Latvia. His first major international outing was in June 2013 when he faced Jonathan Felton in the United States. He won the bout in a TKO.

This was followed by a bout in Greece against Jeremy Ouanna. He then went back home and fought two bouts before going to Germany where he had bouts against Csaba Faur in 2014. Later he would fight against Bjoern Blaschke in March 2015 and against Emre Altintas 2 months later. He would also play in Russia against Mahmoud Charr in 2015.

In October 2016, faced up against Simon Vallily. He won it in a TKO. His next fight on US ground was in 2018. This was his win against Noel Gevor Mikaelyan.

Only Loss as of November 2021

The only loss in his professional career occurred on January 27, 2018. This was against Oleksandr Usyk. The fight was held in Briedis’ hometown of Riga at the Riga Arena. It was for the WBC and WBO Cruiserweight Title.

Briedis lost in a Mixed Decision.

Titles Won

Briedis won his first professional title on November 14, 2014. This was against Ismail Abdoul for the IBA World Cruiser Title.

He defended his IBA Title and gained in the vacant WBC World Cruiser Title on April 1, 2017, against Marco Huck. After he lost the WBC and WBO World Cruiser titles to Usyk in 2018, he went on to win the WBC Diamond Cruiser Title in November 2018. He defeated Mikaelyan for this.

His latest title defense was held on October 16, 2021, when he defended his IBF World Cruiser Title against Artur Mann in a bout held in Riga.
