As a teen, he played a number of different sports including football. He switched to boxing in 2002.

Career

Usyk turned pro in 2013. In November 2013, he defeated Felipe Romero in a match held at the Sports Palace in Kyiv. A month later in December 2013, he had his second fight, this time against Epifanio Mendoza.

In his third fight for 2014, he went up against Danie Venter. That win gave him the WBO Inter-Continental Cruiserweight title. He defended that title three times in 2015 against Andrei Kniazev, Johnny Muller, and Pedro Julio Rodriguez.

In September 2016, he won the WBO World Cruiser when he beat Krzysztof Glowacki. A few months later in December, he defended that title against Thabiso Mchunu. In 2017, he fought to defend the title twice.

In January 2018, he went up against Mairis Briedis and not only defended his former title but also added the WBC World Cruiser to the list. In July of that year, he won the IBF World Cruiser and WBA Super World Cruiserweight titles after he beat Murat Gassiev.

In 2020, he moved to the heavyweight division and won the WBO Inter-Continental Heavyweight title. In 2021, he added the IBF World Heavy, IBO World Heavy, and WBA Super World Heavy to his name after he beat Anthony Joshua in a Unanimous Decision.

In August 2022, he and Joshua went into a re-match with Joshua. The match was held at the Jeddah Superdome. Usyk defended his title.
