Gwendolyn O'Niel
Gwendolyn O'Neil is more known to fans as the 'Stealth Bomber,' the first female boxer from Guyana to win a world boxing title on May 29, 2004. Her interest in boxing was influenced by her childhood. O'Neil grew up the 20th child in a family of 21, and had to fend for herself in school. She began to take boxing seriously with the influence of her husband.
One of her early fights was in Trinidad in 1999, when she knocked out Kim Quashie in the first round, wining the bout with a score of 3-1. She followed this up with a match in Guyana in December of the same year, winning a four round decision over Margaret Walcott. She went on to win more titles in the succeeding years, including a unanimous decision over Krystal Lessie in 2004 and over Pamela London in a unanimous decision after eight rounds.
She lost to Laila Ali in 2007. The fight was short, just 0.56 seconds into the first round, for which Ali apologized for after the match. O'Neil would bounce back winning the vacant WIBA Light Heavyweight title. She lost the title to Carlette Ewell on Nov. 1, 2008. O'Neil won another eight round unanimous decision over Laura Ramsey in 2010 at Fort Myers Stadium in Florida, bagging the WIBA Heavyweight title with the victory.
