July 19, 2008- Christy Martin fought Valerie Mahfood in an eight round draw in Beumont, Texas July 19, 2008. Martin’s boxing techniques were displayed and overwhelmed Mahfood causing her to stumble.
Known as the “Wolfe”, Mahfood had the home court advantage being from Beaumont, Texas who is a former Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight. She began her professional career in June 1997 knocking out Jeanne Martinez in the first round.
The more experienced Martin on the other hand, a Florida native, showed that sheer guts and quick intelligence was the way to dominate. Being a well-known boxer in the 1990’s, she was promoted by no less than Don King.
Her professional match was a draw against the Australian Angela Buchanan but her second fight against Tammy Jones was a TKO in the first round. Her rematch against Angela Buchanan three weeks later after their first fight resulted in a TKO in the second round.
Martin was the media icon for the female boxer in the 90s but she was supplanted by Laila Ali due to a long period of non-appearance in the boxing ring due to some health problems.
Cheers from Mahfood’s admirers were not enough to win her the match with Martin’s experience backing her up but the bout only lead to a clean draw.
