With close to 60,000 fans in attendance at the Dallas Cowboy’s stadium, champion boxer Manny Pacquiao wins over Joshua Clottey and retains his WBO Welterweight title.
Nearly every round ended in favor of the Filipino boxer with Clottey acting almost passive to Pacquiao’s attacks. The fight may not be as thrilling as Pacquiao’s previous fights with Oscar de la Hoya and Ricky Hatton but it was still evident that Pacquiao was in control. Clottey, on the other hand, kept his hands close to his face throughout the match. Despite his loss, Clottey takes home the recognition of being one of Pacquiao’s opponents who was able to go the distance with him.
“He’s a very tough opponent,” Pacquiao said. “He was looking for a big shot.”
Of his loss to Pacquiao, Clottey commented “He has speed, I lost the fight. He was fast and I was taking my time”.
Clottey’s trainer Lenny DeJesus said, “Clottey had the power to knock him out but was reluctant to punch… I don’t think he (Clottey) won a round.”
Pacquiao has been angling to fight Floyd Mayweather, Jr. but plans fell through because of the issue of blood testing. Instead Mayweather is fighting Shane Mosley come May 1. Pacquiao, however remains hopeful that the fight will happen and said, “I want that fight, the world wants that fight.”
