Candi Holyfield fourth wife of boxer Evander Holyfield has filed a protective order against the boxer after he allegedly hit her in various parts of her body on February 1, 2010. This reportedly happened after she refused to show Holyfield the check stubs which were proof of her church offering. During the court filing on Feb. 3, Candi Holyfield told the court that her husband told her that she should be putting God first in her life.
“He said that I was being disrespectful,” she reported.
The boxing great apparently hit his wife on her face, the back of the head and her back during the night of the assault. According to Candi’s report, she and her husband started arguing in the middle of the night. When her husband turned on the lights, he saw the damage to her face and apologized. Evander remained silent about the report, and publicist Belinda Foster told press that the both Holyfield and his wife remain a strong married couple. Police in the couple’s town of Fayetteville also failed to return calls for comments.
Candi Holyfield stated that the abuse started just a few months after her marriage to the boxer, and resumed when she was carrying their first child. Physical incidents escalated especially after 2008, at times involving Holyfield choking, grabbing, and hitting his wife in front of the children and the housekeeper. At one time, Candi reported, her husband threw a bottle of water at her.
Holyfield is a four-time heavyweight champion who’s most famous fight was that against Mike Tyson, where Tyson ended up with a disqualification after biting off Holyfield’s ear.
