Boxing fans will be delighted to know that another power bout is in the horizon with the clinching of the deal for a fight between pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao and undefeated Floyd Mayweather, Jr. in March 2010. Pacquiao reportedly agreed to the match over a two-hour breakfast meeting with promoter Bob Arum.
“Manny has some additional requirements, requests, which Arum didn’t think was a problem,” Michael Koncz, one of Pacquiao’s advisers said. “The requests of Manny were so realistic that Arum doesn’t feel it’s a problem and it’s pretty much a done deal.”
Pacquiao himself revealed on Philippine TV that a fight for March 13 was ok for him. The fight will put Pacquiao on a head-to-head match against the undefeated Mayweather, who is known on and off the ring for his cocky and arrogant style.
“The difference between Floyd and others I have fought is that Floyd makes a lot of trash talk that should not be imitated by young people,” Pacquiao was heard saying.
Details of the contract still need to be ironed out, and the venue is not yet set. Representatives of the New Orleans Super Dome, as well as the representatives of the New Dallas Cowboy’s Stadium have expressed their interest to host the fight. The MGM Grand Hotel Casino has also shown interest in hosting the event.
If the fight pushes through this will only give Manny a few weeks before he starts his post-fight campaign for public office in the Philippines, where he has announced to run for a congressional seat in the 2010 elections.
