Antonio Margarito, a former welterweight champion, and his trainer Javier Capetillo are most probably nervously anticipating the results of testing done on the suspicious plaster-like substance found in Margarito’s gloves.antonio margarito

Last Wednesday, January 28, Margarito and Capetillo had their licenses temporarily suspended. The suspension came after the discovery of a suspicious substance in Margarito’s gloves right before he took to the ring against Shane Mosely last January 24, 2009 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Mosely won the fight, but the investigation into what the substance in Margarito’s gloves was continuous.

The California State Athletic Commission’s (CSAC) chairman Tim Noonan said “The substance found in Margarito’s hand wraps is currently being analyzed by the California Department of Justice. An investigation as to whether either licensee violated CSAC rules is ongoing.”

Margarito and his trainer have been asked to appear during the initial hearing concerning the incident.

When asked to comment on the incident, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said, “I’m happy to see the commission realized how serious the issue is and is acting swiftly. We’ll see what the outcome will be of the situation.”

If proven that the substance in Margarito’s gloves was indeed illegal, it could bode ill for the former welterweight titleholder. All his previous fights will be investigated into and this could mean the end of his career.
