Lightweight fighter Devin Haney beat George Kambosos Jr. and continues to be an undisputed champion, drawing comparisons to Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
A new star has risen in the boxing world and that is American fighter Haney. Saturday, in Melbourne, he defeated Australian fighter Kambosos and has become the first undisputed lightweight champion in 32 years.
In order to make the fight with Kambosos happen, Haney left his old promotion company and signed with Top Rank instead. Other concessions he had to make were to take a pay cut, agree to a rematch clause, and travel to Australia without his dad and trainer Bill Haney.
The 23-year-old showed up and produced a masterful performance which led to a unanimous decision. He now holds all four major belts in his division.
Haneys slickness, skill, and manner of fighting rightfully drew comparisons to Floyd Mayweather Jr..
Following Haneys win, he and opponent Kambosos, Jr. shared some warmth over social media.
This was Kambosos Jr.s first loss in 21 fights and he has stated that he will go for the rematch which will again take place in Australia.
“Yes, 100 percent we will do it again,” said Kambosos, Jr. “If I hadn’t given him this shot, he wouldn’t have had his moment right now. Today, they gave him the decision but I’m sure it will change when we get it on again.”
The rematch might not happen anytime soon and many pundits are eyeing a likely fight between Haney and Gervonta Davis who has 27 wins under his belt. Another likely next opponent is Vasiliy Lomachenko.
Thank you for the opportunity! True champ! https://t.co/vgiJA6jXaZ
