Nov 10, 2008 – Yesterday, Joe Calzaghe was named as one of the greatest sporting champions of all time in Britain after he won his possible final match in boxing.
The Madison Square Garden was filled with Welsh flags yesterday morning where Calzaghe made a huge comeback after getting knocked down on the first round and defeated Jones Jr.
The win was Calzaghe’s 46th fight in a row where he remained unbeaten. After yesterday’s win, he is quite close to the 49 unbeaten fight record of well known boxing icon Rocky Marciano. With matches away from Marciano’s record, Calzaghe has kept his fans guessing whether or not he is retiring.
Right after his fight, Calzaghe said that he is not yet going to announce anything despite his stating that it would “possibly” be his last fight before the fight started. He maintains that he is quite happy with the match – save for the first round knock down of course.
According to Calzaghe, “I can’t answer those sort of questions right now. Those are the answers I’m going to go away and evaluate. I don’t really like to do re-matches. I just want to spend some time with my family, have a rest. I’m so happy with what I’ve achieved this year.”
Gareth Edwards has gone and said, “To win in America against one of their best and to have gone a career without a defeat must put him among the top of British as well as Welsh sporting greats.”
