Oscar De La Hoya’s promotional firm ‘Golden Boy Promotions’ is gearing for something they refer to as a ‘major announcement’. The boxing firm will be holding a press conference on Thursday, October 30 to give the boxing world their big news.
Despite the secrecy, reliable sources have leaked that the announcement will concern the fact that unbeaten Venezuelan boxer Edwin Valero will be joining De La Hoya as his sparring partner. Valero is known for his impressive 24-0 win - 24 KO record. He will be helping De La Hoya train for the champion’s upcoming bout against well-known Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao.
The De La Hoya - Pacquaio fight is perhaps the most anticipated fight of the year – if not, the decade. As of now, De La Hoya is busy training at the Big Bear camp in California. Aside from taking on Valero, De La Hoya is also being trained by famed Mexican Ignacio Beristain.
Some critics say that this move by De La Hoya is more of a publicity stunt than a serious training move. Valero and Pacquiao may have their similarities, but the former is most known for his ‘free-swinging’ boxing strategy. Pacquiao on the other hand fights with more measured swings.
