WNIT is the acronym for Women’s National Invitation Tournament.

This is a postseason tournament that started in 1998 for those women’s basketball teams under the NCAA Division 1 who did not qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

The first preseason was played in 1994 and the first postseason was played in 1998. There are 16 preseason teams and 48 postseason teams.
