The Toronto Raptors are a premier professional basketball team hailing from Toronto, Ontario, and are a prominent member of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Founded in 1995 as part of the league's expansion into Canada, the Raptors hold the distinction of being the sole Canadian franchise in the NBA after the relocation of the Vancouver Grizzlies to Memphis in 2001.
History
The Raptors began their journey playing home games at the SkyDome, now known as Rogers Centre, before moving to the Scotiabank Arena in 1999. Early on, the team faced challenges typical of expansion franchises, but a significant turning point came in 1998 when the Raptors acquired Vince Carter through a trade. His arrival propelled the team to unprecedented heights, leading to playoff appearances in 2000, 2001, and 2002. Notably, the Raptors achieved their first playoff series victory in 2001, setting the stage for a brighter future.Following Carter's departure to the New Jersey Nets in 2004, the team looked to Chris Bosh to lead the next chapter. Under Bryan Colangelo, who took over as President and General Manager, the Raptors clinched their first division title in five years during the 2006-07 season. Although they returned to the playoffs again in 2008, a series of struggles followed, leading to another rebuild phase after Bosh left for the Miami Heat in 2010.
A new era began in 2013 with the hiring of Masai Ujiri as General Manager. Ujiri's bold moves, including trading Bargnani to the New York Knicks, laid the groundwork for a revitalized roster. With a dynamic backcourt featuring Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan, the Raptors not only reclaimed their place in the playoffs but also captured their second Atlantic Division title and recorded a franchise-high of 48 wins in the 2013-14 season.
