Thornton was selected by the Miami Heat with the 43rd overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft and was immediately traded to the New Orleans Hornets. He had a strong rookie season, earning NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors.

NBA teams he's played for include the New Orleans Hornets from 2009 to 2011, Sacramento Kings from 2011 to 2014, Brooklyn Nets in 2014, Boston Celtics from 2014 to 2015, Phoenix Suns in 2015, Houston Rockets from 2015 to 2016, and the Washington Wizards from 2016 to 2017.

After his NBA career, Thornton played in the NBA G League for the Grand Rapids Drive and the Motor City Cruise. He also briefly played in China.
