Richard D. Alvarez, popularly known as Rich Alvarez, is a prominent figure in Philippine basketball, recognized for his versatility as a small forward. Born on October 30, 1980, in Yokosuka, Japan, he has made a significant impact in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) as a member of the Barangay Ginebra Kings.

Standing at six feet four inches and weighing 210 pounds, Alvarez entered the professional arena when he was drafted first overall by the Shell Turbo Chargers in 2004. His debut was a lesson in patience, as he faced early challenges, being benched by coach John Moran, who felt he wasn't quite ready for the spotlight. However, with the arrival of coach Leo Austria, Alvarez's fortunes changed, leading to a remarkable rookie season that culminated in him earning the Rookie of the Year award.
