Dawn Michelle Staley is a retired professional American basketball player. She is one of WNBA’s Top 15 Players of All Time, Basketball Hall of Famer, and Olympic Gold Medalist. Staley is currently the head coach of South Carolina Gamecocks and the United States Women’s National Basketball Team.

Although born in Pennsylvania, Dawn Michelle Staley attended the University of Virginia in Virginia. She was a remarkable player during her college seasons. Staley was named the female athlete of the year by ACC in 1991 and the national player of the year in 1992. With 454 steals, Staley held the record for most number of steals during her college career.

The American Basketball League team Richmond Rage included her in the final squad in 1996, thus beginning her ABL career. The Richmond Rage went in for the finals of ABL in 1997. Staley got drafted by Charlotte Sting in 1999. The Stings entered the WNBA playoffs championship game under Staley’s leadership.

The Stings traded her with Houston Comets in 2005. At the start of her season with the Comets, Stanley announced her plans for retirement after the season ended. She is stands third in the overall WNBA records with her 1,797 points, 1,005 assists and 267 steals.

Stanley also played for international teams like Italy, France, Spain and Brazil before joining ABL. Staley played for the Team USA right from the start of her career. She took part in the World Championships in 1994 and was honored with the title of USA basketball Female Athlete of the Year.

In 1996, she led her team to victory for the Olympics games in Atlanta with a record score of 60-0. She was a part of victorious team of 2000 Olympics. Again in 2004, she was able to win gold for her country at the 2004 Olympics games held in Athens.

USA announced her as the winner of the 2004 USA Basketball Player of the Year.

After retirement, Staley took up coaching the Temple University team under her guidance. The Temple Owls team under her lead remarkable improvement in their performance. The team holds the record of continuous number of wins, an astounding 25, which is unmatched even by any of the men’s basketball team. Staley also won medals for the Coach of the Year for many years.

Staley left the Temples University in 2008, having amplified the team’s glory to many bounds. She joined the University of Carolina after leaving Temples. The USA team won their fourth gold medal at the 2008 Olympics games in China due to her services as an assistant coach.

She became the women’s head basketball coach of the University of South Carolina on May 7, 2008. Staley was also chosen as the head coach of the USA National Team on March 10, 2017.
