Gus Williams

Gus Williams is a former American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1975 to 1987. He is best known for his tenure with the Seattle SuperSonics, where he led the team to an NBA championship in 1979.

Williams attended Mount Vernon High School in New York. He then played college basketball at the University of Southern California from 1971 to 1975, where he averaged 14.7 points per game over his collegiate career.

During his senior year in 1975, he reached new heights in his collegiate career, earning both Consensus second-team All-American and First-team All-Pac-8 honors. USC later retired his jersey number 10, cementing his legacy as one of the school's all-time greats.

Professional Career

Williams was selected by the Golden State Warriors in the second round of the 1975 NBA Draft.

His breakthrough came after joining the Seattle SuperSonics in 1977, where he became a key player in their championship run. In the 1979 NBA Finals, he averaged 28.6 points per game, helping the Sonics defeat the Washington Bullets.

He sat out the entire 1980-81 season due to a contract dispute.

Upon his return, he continued his strong play, earning two NBA All-Star selections (1982, 1983). He later played for the Washington Bullets and Atlanta Hawks before retiring in 1987.
