Anderson's professional career began in 1984 when he was selected 27th overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Draft. He spent one season with the Cavaliers before playing three years with the Indiana Pacers (1985-1988).

His longest NBA stint came with the Philadelphia 76ers, where he played from 1988 to 1993. He then had brief stops with the New Jersey Nets, Rochester Renegade, and Washington Bullets before beginning his European career.

Anderson found success in France, playing for Montpellier Basket where he earned the LNB Pro A Best Scorer award in 1995. He also played for Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel and had stints with the Atlantic City Seagulls and Le Mans Sarthe Basket.
