Steve Alford is an American former professional basketball player and current college basketball coach. He is best known for his stellar college career at Indiana University and his successful transition into coaching.
He also played in the National Basketball Association for the Dallas Mavericks and the Golden State Warriors.

He attended Chrysler High School in New Castle, Indiana, where he earned Indiana Mr. Basketball honors in 1983.He then committed to play for Indiana University from 1983 to 1987, where he established himself as one of college basketball's premier players. During his collegiate career, he led the Hoosiers to an NCAA championship in 1987, the same year he was named Big Ten MVP.
He was named as the Consensus First-Team All-American in both 1986 and 1987, and earned First-Team All-Big Ten honors for three consecutive years from 1985 to 1987.
Playing Career
Alford was selected as the 26th overall pick in the second round of the 1987 NBA draft by the Dallas Mavericks. His playing career lasted from 1987 to 1991, during which he wore numbers 2 and 4.His NBA career began with the Mavericks from 1987 to 1988, followed by a season with the Golden State Warriors from 1988 to 1989. He returned to the Mavericks for his final two seasons from 1989 to 1991.
Coaching Career
After his playing career, Alford transitioned to coaching in 1991. His coaching journey began at Manchester University from 1991 to 1995, followed by Southwest Missouri State University from 1995 to 1999.He then led the University of Iowa from 1999 to 2007, the University of New Mexico from 2007 to 2013, and the University of California, Los Angeles from 2013 to 2018. He currently serves as head coach at the University of Nevada since 2019.
His coaching achievements include a Pacific-12 Conference tournament championship in 2014, two Mountain West Conference tournament championships in 2012 and 2013.
He also has four Mountain West Conference regular season championships in 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2013. Two Big Ten Conference tournament championships in 2001 and 2006, and two Heartland Conference regular season championships in 1994 and 1995.
He has been named Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year three times in 2009, 2010, and 2013.
