Calvin Miles Jr.
Calvin Andre Miles, Jr. is a professional basketball player from the United States of America who plays as a swingman, i.e. he can play as a shooting guard or a small forward. Miles went to the Skyline High School in Dallas and with an average of 23.2 points per game and 11.2 rebounds with 3.3 assists, was named to the Parade Magazine All-American First Team. The following year, he bettered his scoring per game to 23.5 although his rebounds fell to 10 per game.
Miles led from the front as he took his high school team to the quarterfinals of the Class 5A Region II. This led him to be named to the All-Dallas Area Player of the Year on The Dallas Morning News' lineup. He was also named to the 2005 McDonald's High School All-American team and was picked as the 19th most promising prospect by Rivals.com.
At the end of his high school career, Skyline High School retired his jersey to make him only the second basketball player to get this honour after Larry Johnson.
Although Miles had decided to attend the University of Texas at Austin if he was not picked in the First Round of the NBA Draft, after the Utah Jazz picked him in the second round and offered him a contract worth a first round pick, he decided to stick to the NBA team. His guaranteed 2-year contract made him the youngest Jazz player in its history, at just 18 years.
That season, the Jazz decided to assign Miles to the Albuquerque Thunderbirds in the NBA's D-League. In the process of gaining more experience, Miles spent another season with the Idaho Stampede. By his third season with the Jazz, Miles had seen some action in the Jazz shirt but was mostly a reserve player. Although his performance improved in the pre-season of 2006-07, his joy was short-lived as it dipped again. Midway through the 2007-08 season, Gordan Giricek was removed from the roster to give Miles his shot at the NBA. But Kyle Korver came into the team and put Miles back on the reserve bench for longer periods.
At the end of the 2007-08 season, Miles became a free agent and signed a 4-year, $15 million contract with an Oklahoma City NBA team. On the last day of the 7-day limit, the Jazz decided to match that offer and keep Miles in their squad.
