High School and College Career
Boynes attended Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where he was a standout player. He was named a Fourth-team Parade All-American in 1974 and a First-team Parade All-American in 1975.
He then played college basketball at the University of San Francisco from 1975 to 1978. At USF, Boynes was a key player for the Dons, earning Third-team All-American honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) in both 1977 and 1978.
Professional Career
Boynes was selected by the New Jersey Nets with the 13th overall pick in the first round of the 1978 NBA Draft. He played two seasons with the Nets from 1978 to 1980, making his NBA debut on October 13, 1978.
In 1980, Boynes joined the expansion Dallas Mavericks for their inaugural season, which would be his final year in the NBA.
After leaving the NBA, Boynes continued his basketball career overseas.
He played for Fenerbahçe in Turkey during the 1983-1984 season, Pantterit in Finland for the 1985-1986 season, and Nice BC in France for the 1986-1987 season before retiring from professional basketball.
