Boyd was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the 5th overall pick in the first round of the 1972 NBA Draft. He had an impressive rookie season, earning NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 1973.

Boyd played four seasons with the 76ers from 1972 to 1976 before joining the New Orleans Jazz for his final two professional seasons from 1976 to 1978.

After his playing career, Boyd returned to his alma mater, serving as an assistant coach for Oregon State University from 1987 to 1992.
