John Block

John Block is an American former professional basketball player who enjoyed a ten-season career in the National Basketball Association where he was named an NBA All-Star in 1973. He has played with Milwaukee Bucks, Philadelphia 76ers, Chicago Bulls and more. After he retired from the NBA, he became a college basketball coach.

John William Block Jr. was born on April 16, 1944, in Los Angeles, California, United States.

He stood 6 feet 9 inches tall and weighed 207 pounds during his playing career. Block played as a power forward and center, shot right-handed, and wore jersey numbers 34, 41, and 35 throughout his NBA career.

After his playing days, Block transitioned to coaching, leading several college basketball programs in California and Massachusetts.

High School and College Career

Block attended Glendale High School in Glendale, California, before playing college basketball at the University of Southern California from 1963 to 1966.

At USC, he twice earned First-Team All-AAWU honors and established himself as a dominant frontcourt player.

Professional Career

Block was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the 27th overall pick in the third round of the 1966 NBA Draft. He played one season with the Lakers before joining the San Diego Rockets, where he quickly became a standout.

He later played for the Milwaukee Bucks, Philadelphia 76ers, Kansas City–Omaha Kings, New Orleans Jazz, and Chicago Bulls, finishing his NBA career in 1976.

After retiring as a player, Block enjoyed a lengthy coaching career, leading programs at UC San Diego, Gordon College, Bethany College, and Point Loma Nazarene.
