Lewis’ father, Robert Lewis, is from Los Angeles and moved to Las Vegas for work. Robert served as a coach in recreational youth leagues and played a significant role in Maxwell’s basketball development.
High School and College Career
Lewis had an unconventional high school career, attending multiple schools including Somerset-Losee, Ed W. Clark High School in Las Vegas, and AZ Compass Prep in Chandler, Arizona. He briefly considered bypassing college for a preparatory program called Chameleon BX but ultimately chose to play college basketball.
Lewis played two seasons at Pepperdine University from 2021 to 2023. In his sophomore year, he averaged 16.6 points per game and was named to the All-West Coast Conference Second Team.
Professional Career
Lewis was selected by the Denver Nuggets with the 40th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and was immediately traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. He signed with the Lakers on July 8, 2023.
For the 2023-2024 season, he also played for the South Bay Lakers in the NBA G League. His contract was converted to a standard one in 2024.
