High School and College Career
He attended JT Barber High School in New Bern, North Carolina. Later, he played college basketball for the Indiana University Bloomington.
Some of the accolades he received in high school and college include being named to the First-team All-American USBWA. He was also named to the 1961 Consensus second-team All-American.
Professional Career
In 1961, turned pro and was selected first overall during the 1961 NBA Draft, picked by the the-Chicago Packers, now the Washington Wizards. He played for the team from 1961 to 1965.
In 1962, Bellamy was named the NBA Rookie of the Year. That year, he was also named an NBA All-Star for the first time. In 1965, he was traded to the New York Knicks and played with them through to 1968.
From 1968 to 1970, he played for the Detroit Pistons, and from 1970 to 1974, he was with the Atlanta Hawks. Before he retired in 1974, he signed for a short time with the New Orleans Jazz.
