Frank Ramsey was a professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association for the Boston Celtics. He also coached in the American Basketball Association for a season. Ramsey is a seven-time NBA Champion.
Player Profile and College Career
Frank Vernon Ramsey Jr. was born on July 13, 1931, in Corydon, Kentucky in the United States. He died on July 8, 2018, in Madisonville, Kentucky. Ramsey stood 191 cm tall and his weight was last listed at 86 kg.
He attended the University of Kentucky from 1950 to 1954. While there, he received All-American Honors and he also helped lead the team to the 1951 NCAA Championship.
Professional Career
He was drafted into the NBA during the 1953 NBA Draft and was the 5th overall pick of the draft. After playing his rookie season with the Boston Celtics, he took a year off to serve in the US Military. He later returned to the NBA and the Celtics.
While with Boston, he was named an NBA Champion seven times. He was one of the top players of his era with the Celtics. In 1981, he was named to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Also, the Celtics retired jersey number 23 in his honor.
In 1970, he tried his hand at coaching and coached the Kentucky Colonels in the ABA. He only coached the team for one season.
