He attended Northern Senior High in Detroit, Michigan. Later, he joined Syracuse University to play collegiate basketball. While there, he was named the 1990 Big East Player of the Year. He also received All-American and All-Big East honors.

When he retired from the NBA, Syracuse also retired jersey number 44 in his honor.
Professional Career
Coleman was drafted into the NBA during the 1990 NBA Draft, chosen first in the first round by the New Jersey Nets. In his first year with the Nets, he was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 1991, he was also named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team that year.
In 1994, he was named an NBA All-Star. He was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in 1995. He stayed with the team through to 1998 before he moved to play for the Charlotte Hornets. He played for the Hornets for two seasons before returning to the 76ers in 2001 and playing with them through to 2004.
His last season in the NBA was played with the Detroit Pistons. He faced suspension in 2005 as he was part of the infamous 2004 Pacers-Pistons Brawl.
