Charlie Scott is a former professional basketball player in the National Basketball Association. He has played in a number of teams in the NBA including the Phoenix Suns and the Boston Celtics. In 1976, he became an NBA Champion when he was playing with the Celtics. Scott also played in the American Basketball Association for the Virginia Squires.

High School and College Career

Scott attended Stuyvesant High School in his hometown. He later moved to play for Laurinburg Institute in North Carolina.

He had several options going into college. He explored the idea of going to Duke University and North Carolina State University before ultimately deciding to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At UNC, he was the first black athlete to receive a scholarship.

While in college, he was named to the First-team All-ACC from 1968 to 1970. He was also named the ACC Athlete of the Year in 1970.

Professional Career

In 1970, he was drafted into the NBA by the Boston Celtics. At that time, he had already signed to play for the Virginia Squires in the American Basketball Association. While with the ABA, he was named the ABA Rookie of the Year. In 1971 and 1972, he was named an ABA All-Star. He later switched over to the NBA and finally joined the Suns in 1972.

In 1973, he was named an NBA All-Star. He would be named an All-Star again in 1974 and 1975. In 1975, he started playing for the Boston Celtics. In 1976, he was part of the team that won that year’s NBA Championship. In 1977, he moved to play for the Los Angeles Lakers. Later in 1978, he played for the Denver Nuggets.

In 2018, Scott was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. A few years back in 2015, he was also inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame.
