Mitchell attended Liberty County High School in Hinesville, Georgia. As a junior in 2015-16, he led his team to its first Class 4A state title and earned him Savannah Morning News Player of the Year honors.Mitchell began his college career at Auburn University in 2017-18. He then transferred to Baylor University, sitting out the 2018-19 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
As a redshirt sophomore at Baylor in 2019-20, Mitchel earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and Third Team All-Big 12 honors. In his junior season in 2020-21, he helped lead Baylor to the NCAA championship. Mitchell was named the Naismith and NABC Defensive Player of the Year.
Professional Career
Mitchell was selected with the 9th overall pick by the Sacramento Kings in the 2021 NBA Draft. He helped the Kings win the 2021 NBA Summer League Championship, earning co-MVP honors.In his rookie season in 2021-22, he earned NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors. On March 20, 2022, he scored a career-high 28 points along with nine assists in an overtime loss to the Phoenix Suns.
On June 28, 2024, after three seasons with the Kings, Mitchell was traded to the Toronto Raptors.
