Mike Barrett did his schooling from the Richwood High School in Richwood, West Virginia. He later attended the West Virginia University Institute of Technology where he played for the college basketball team called the Golden Bears. He was a part of the United States National Basketball team that won the gold medal in the 1968 Summer Olympics held in Mexico City. Barrett also represented the USA national team in the 1967 FIBA World Championships. In 1969, Barrett was playing with the Washington Capitols in the rival American Basketball Association. In 1971, he was acquired by the Virginia Squires also in the ABA. In 1973, after a season with the Squires, Barrett played with the San Diego Conquistadors. He played with the ABA throughout his career from 1969 to 1973.
In a total of 187 games in the ABA, Barrett averaged at 13.4 points per game, 3.9 assists per game and 3.2 rebounds per game.
