High School and College Career
He attended Kinston High School in his hometown and he helped lead his team to a number of victories. By the time he was a senior, he was recognized as one of the top prospects. He was also named North Carolina’s Mr. Basketball in 2015. In the same year, he was also named as a McDonald’s All-American.
He joined the team at Duke University, playing for the Blue Devils. While in college, he was named the ACC Rookie of the Year in 2016 and he was also named to the Second-team All-ACC.
NBA Career
He declared for the NBA in 2016 and was drafted into the league by the Los Angeles Lakers. He was the second-youngest player drafted that year. He debuted with them in October. In 2017, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.
Because he was involved in an on-court fight early in the 2017-2018 season, he received a four-game suspension. In 2019, the Lakers traded him to the New Orleans Pelicans along with Josh Hart and Lonzo Ball. In 2020, he was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player. He was also named an NBA All-Star that year.
In March 2023, he completed his first triple-double in a match against the Charlotte Hornets.
