In high school, he played both basketball and baseball. He attended the Canterbury School and Brewster Academy. A recurring injury forced him to focus more on basketball than baseball.For college, he committed to play for the University of Louisville for the Cardinals. In college, he played under No.45 in reference to Michael Jordan who played under that number during his baseball career.
While with the Cardinals, he was named to the First Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference. He declared for the NBA in 2017 following his sophomore year.
NBA Career
He was drafted into the NBA by the Denver Nuggets during the 2017 NBA Draft. He was their 13th overall pick during the first round. They later traded him to the Utah Jazz for Tyler Lyndon and Trey Lyles. In July of that year, he signed a contract with the Jazz and he debuted with the Jazz in October of that year.He signed a shoe deal with Adidas early in his career. In 2018, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. That year, he also won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest. While a rookie, he set a record for scoring when he made 41 points in a game against the New Orleans Pelicans in December 2017.
He was named an NBA All-Star for the first time in 2020. Also in that year, he tested positive for COVID-19. It was also in 2020 that he joined Allen Iverson and Michael Jordan as players who were able to score more than 50 points in a playoff series. The Jazz extended his contract in 2020.
He was again named an NBA All-Star in 2021 and again in 2022. In 2023, he was named an All-Star for the fourth time in his career.
