Doug McDermott is an American professional basketball player for the Indiana Pacers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He has also played for the Chicago Bulls, Oklahoma City Thunder, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, Indiana Pacers, and San Antonio Spurs.

McDermott is the son of current Creighton coach Greg McDermott. His father was the head coach at his alma mater during Doug's college career from 2010 to 2014.

High School and College Career

McDermott attended Ames High School in Ames, Iowa, where he played alongside high school All-American Harrison Barnes.

Later, he committed to play for Creighton University. The Creighton Bluejays later retired jersey number 3 in his honor.

In 2014, he led the NCAA in Season Scoring. That same year, he was named the Big East Player of the Year. He also received the Lute Olsen Award twice in 2012 and 2014. Also in 2014, he was named the National College Player of the Year.

Professional Career

McDermott was selected by the Denver Nuggets with the 11th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. He was traded to the Chicago Bulls on draft night.

McDermott played his first two and a half NBA seasons with the Bulls from 2014 to 2017. He earned NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors in 2015.

In February 2017, McDermott was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder. McDermott split the 2017-18 season between the New York Knicks and Dallas Mavericks. In July 2018, he signed a three-year contract with the Indiana Pacers.

In August 2021, McDermott signed a three-year, $42 million contract with the San Antonio Spurs. He missed most of the 2021-22 season with an ankle injury.

McDermott was traded back to the Pacers in February 2024. As of the end of the 2023-24 season, he remains with Indiana.
