High School and College Career
Murray was born and raised in Seattle, Washington, and attended Rainier Beach High School, where he was a powerhouse varsity. His school is also known for producing great basketball players like Nate Robinson, Kevin Porter Jr., and Jamal Crawford.
While he was in high school, he led his team to three Class 3A state championship titles, therefore, declaring him as Washington Mr. Basketball by the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association.
When he entered college, he committed to play for the University of Washington, where he contributed 16.1 points with 5.9 rebounds and 4.4 steals per game. In 2016, he declared that he was going in for the 3-year college eligibility to join the NBA Draft.
Professional Career
During the NBA Draft, he was the 29th overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs, so he joined the team in the summer and participated in the 2016 NBA Summer League. At the same time, he signed a two-way contract with the team to play for the Austin League.
In 2017, Murray had to replace Spurs’ superstar, Tony Parker, due to a leg injury. He became the team’s point guard against the Houston Rockets, where he only scored 2 points in 15 minutes.
In the last round, he contributed 11 points with 10 rebounds and 5 assists making the Spurs win Game 6. Joining David Robinson and Tim Duncan, he was one of the rookies who set a record for a point/rebound double-double during the playoff.
In season 2017-18, he recorded 16 points with 5 rebounds and 2 assists when they encountered the Minnesota Timberwolves. He also made a major contribution against the Toronto Raptors with about 14 rebounds.
In June 2022, Murray left the Spurs for the Atlanta Hawks as part of a trade involving Danilo Gallinari. As of the 2023-2024 season, he continues to play for the Hawks.
