High School and College Career
He attended Kinston High School in Kinston, North Carolina before transferring to Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia. Later, he committed to play college basketball for the University of North Carolina and was there from 1993 to 1995.
Later, the North Carolina Tar Heels retired jersey number 42 in his honor.
Professional Career
He joined the NBA during the 1995 NBA Draft and was a 1st round pick, selected 3rd overall by the Philadelphia 76ers.
In his first year in the NBA, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.
In 1997, he was traded to the Detroit Pistons. Then from 2002 to his retirement in 2013, he moved around the NBA playing for the Washington Wizards, Dallas Mavericks, Milwaukee Bucks, Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks, and the Brooklyn Nets.
A couple of years after his retirement, he started working as an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors. In 2016, he was made head coach of the NBA G League team – Raptors 905. From 2018 to 2019, he was an assistant coach for the Memphis Grizzlies, and starting 2019, he is the head coach for the Vanderbilt University men’s basketball team.
