Greg Monroe is an American basketball player who was named the Big East Rookie of the Year in 2009. He currently plays in the power forward or center position for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
While attending the Helen Cox High School, he was listed as the top power forward and the 8th best player in the country in 2008. He then went to Georgetown where he was named to the Big East All-Rookie team and was hailed as the Big East Rookie of the Year. He decided to forego his last two years of college eligibility.
Monroe declared for the NBA draft on April 17, 2010 and was selected by the Detroit Pistons. This 7th overall pick came off the bench on October 30, 2012. He recorded a career-high of 27 points and 12 rebounds. In the season’s NBA Rookie of the Year voting, he placed sixth on the list.
He started and played in all of the team’s 66 games in the 2011 to 2012 Season. Monroe was named to the NBA All-Star Weekend Rising Stars Challenge on February 8, 2012.
He recorded his third consecutive season scoring more than 1,000 points and more than 600 rebounds in the 2013 to 2014 Season. He missed several games in the next season due to a knee injury.
Monroe transferred to the Milwaukee Bucks on July 9, 2015 where he recorded 22 points and 14 rebounds during his debut. Coach Jason Kidd assigned him a permanent bench role during the 2016 to 2017 Season.
He was traded to the Phoenix Suns on November 7, 2017, where he had a season high 17 rebounds while dealing with a left calf strain. Monroe signed with the Boston Celtics on February 8, 2018 and became the first center of the franchise to achieve a triple-double since Robert Parish in 1987. He signed with the Toronto Raptors on August 10, 2018.
