David Thompson is a retired professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association for the Denver Nuggets and the Seattle SuperSonics.

He is a widow and he and his wife Cathy had two daughters.
High School and College Career
He attended Crest High School in Shelby, North Carolina. Later, he committed to play college basketball for the North Carolina State University and was there from 1972 to 1975.
In 1974, he helped lead NC State to the NCAA Championship. That year, he was also named the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player. In 1975, Thompson was named the National College Player of the Year.
Professional Career
During the 1975 NBA Draft, he was drafted into the NBA and was the first overall pick of the draft, selected by the Atlanta Hawks. He was then traded to the Denver Nuggets. He played for the Nuggets from 1975 to 1982.
Before he retired, he played for the Seattle Supersonics from 1982 to 1984.
In his time in the NBA, he was named an NBA All-Star four times. In 1979, he was named the NBA All-Star Game MVP. He was also named to the All-NBA First Team twice.
