Kevin Johnson is a retired professional basketball player. He played in the National Basketball Association for the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Phoenix Suns. In his career, he was named an NBA All-Star three times, and in 1989, he was named the NBA Most Improved Player.

In 2008, he became the 55th Mayor of Sacramento. He served from December 2008 to December 2016.

His father died when he was three years old. In 2011, he married Michelle Rhee, a former politician. They married at a Tennessee mountain resort.

High School and College Career

He attended Sacramento High School in Sacramento, California. Later, he committed to play college basketball for the University of California, Berkley, and was there from 1983 to 1987.

While in college, he was named to the First-team All-Pac-10 twice. The California Golden Bears also retired jersey number 11 in his honor.

Professional Career

Johnson joined the NBA in 1987. He was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 1987 NBA Draft. He played with the Cavaliers from 1987 to 1988 before he was traded to the Phoenix Suns.

Johnson would play the remainder of his professional career with the Suns. In 1990, he was named an NBA All-Star for the first time. He would be named an All-Star again in 1991 and 1994. He would also be named to the All-NBA Second Team four times and the All-NBA Third Team once.

In 1989, after he moved to the Suns, he was named NBA Most Improved Player.

He retired from the NBA In 1998 but came back in 2000 to still play for the Suns before quitting professional basketball for good.

After his basketball career, he turned his focus to politics, and in 2008, he was elected as the 55th Mayor of Sacramento. He served from 2008 to December 2016.

He is now the CEO of Strive for College, a non-profit organization that helps low-income students get into college.
