Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf is a former professional basketball player. He played in the National Basketball Association and was named the NBA Most Improved Player in 1993 while playing with the Denver Nuggets. In addition to his NBA career, he also played internationally in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

High School and College Career
Abdul-Rauf attended Gulfport High School in his hometown. In 1987 and 1988, he was named Mississippi Mr. Basketball. He also received Para and McDonald’s All-American honors.He went on to play collegiate basketball for Louisiana State University from 1988 to 1990. While there, he was named the SEC Player of the Year in 1989 and 1990. He was also named the 1989 USBWA National Freshman of the Year.
Professional Career
In 1990, Abdul-Rauf joined the NBA after being drafted by the Denver Nuggets in the first round. He was the 3rd overall pick of the draft. He played with the Nuggets from 1990 to 1996. In his first year, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.In 1993, he was named the NBA's Most Improved Player. In 1996, he started playing for the Sacramento Kings. Abdul-Rauf left the NBA in 1998 and started playing for Fenerbahce in Turkey. After a season with the team, he returned to the NBA and played for the Vancouver Grizzlies from 2000 to 2001.
From 2003 to his retirement in 2011, he played for Ural Great, Sedina Roseto, Aris BC, Al-Ittihad, and Kyoto Hannaryz. In 2004, he helped Ural win the Russian Cup.
