His parents are Jack and Clementine and his grandfather was Huston Stockton, who played in the National Football League.
High School and College Career
Stockton attended Gonzaga Preparatory School where he played basketball for the school team. Later, he accepted an offer from Dan Fitzgerald of Gonzaga University. His grandfather Houston also attended Gonzaga.
As a senior in Gonzaga, he was named the WCAC Player of the Year. He was also named to the First-team All-WCAC in 1983 and 1984.
Professional Career
He declared for the NBA in 1984 and was selected by the Utah Jazz during the 1984 NBA Draft. He was the 16th overall pick of the draft.
From 1988 to 1996, he became the NBA Assists Leader. Also in 1988, he was named to the All-NBA Third Team for the first time in his career. He was named an NBA All-Star for the first time in his career in 1989. He was named an All-Star 10 times in his career. In 1993, he was named the NBA All-Star Game MVP.
He announced his retirement from professional basketball in 2003.
The Jazz held a retirement ceremony for him and they retired his Jersey Number in his honor. Stockton was later named to the 50th and 75th NBA Anniversary Teams.
After his career with the NBA, he served as the assistant coach for Montana State University’s women’s basketball program for the 2015-2016 season.
