As of Monday, June 9, 2008, what are the standings in the WNBA?
With a few more games on everyone’s stats sheet, it’s easier to make some conclusions now.
Here’s the Eastern Conference: Connecticut Sun 7 - 1 Detroit Shock 7 - 2 Indiana Fever 4 - 2 Chicago Sky 3 - 4 New York Liberty 3 - 4 Washington Mystics 2 - 6 Atlanta Dream 0 - 7
Here’s the Western Conference: Minnesota Lynx 6 - 1 Seattle Storm 6 - 3 Los Angeles Sparks 3 - 4 Sacramento Monarchs 4 - 3 San Antonio Silver Stars 3 - 4 Phoenix Mercury 2 - 4 Houston Comets 1 - 7
The Atlanta Dream are an expansion team and are where they were expected to be – at the bottom of the barrel.
But the Phoenix Mercury? Last year’s defending champions. They’re only 2 - 4 and that is certainly a shock.
Even more so are the Los Angeles Sparks - the team with Lisa Leslie and Candace Parker!
The Sparks lost their home opener to the Mercury (who finally might be coming around) despite a stellar performance by Parker - 19 points, 14 rebounds, and 8 assists. Lisa Leslie had a double double also.
The Sparks have made a habit of giving up…or almost giving up…big leads. They’ll have to do something about that as the season continues.
