The Minnesota Lynx are celebrating their tenth anniversary season this year, and doing it in fine style so far, as they’ve opened 3-0 for the first time in their history.
The Lynx were an expansion team. They were founded in 1998, and played their first season in 1999. They’ve played all their games at the Target Center in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Their first decade was a tough one…as they started out as a .500 club, improved slightly…and then had two subpar seasons:
1999 –15 17 .469 2000 –15 17 .469 2001 –12 20 .375 2002 –10 22 .313 2003 –18 16 .529 (made the playoffs) 2004 –18 16 .529 (made the playoffs) 2005 –14 20 .412 2006 –10 24 .294 2007 –10 24 .294
The Lynx began the 2007 season with a 0-7 record…and lost 10 straight games in the month of July. This despite the fact that they had such star college players as Seimone Augustus and Lindsey Harding.
Does their current success have anything to do with additional pieces of the puzzle added in the 2008 draft?
Lady Vol Nicky Anosike is a defensive presence, and Charde Houston from UConn is a fireplug off the bench. Rookie Candice Wiggins from Stanford is no slouch either. Anna DaForge pours in the points as well, and Seimone Augustus continues her stellar play.
The Lynx are the only undefeated team left in the WNBA…admittedly that doesn’t mean very much when you consider that they’ve only played three games!
That’s the one flaw in the WNBA season, it must be admitted. They play too few games and there’s too long of a delay between games.
The Lynx will play the 0-3 Phoenix Mercury on Saturday, May 31, 2008. The Mercury are the defending WNBA champions, but haven’th had much success this year.
The Lynx are playing at home and the fans should be fired up, so it should be a good game.
