Jesse H. Jones High School decided to retire their Number 22 jersey and Daniel Gibson along with the entire Cleveland Cavaliers team attended the ceremony on 10 December, 2009. Gibson wore No. 22 and led the Jones into Class 4A state championships in 2004. He took the team to score 31-5 with an individual average of 25.5 points per game including 4 steals. The 6’2” Guard was named amongst the McDonald’s All-American team at the end of his 4-year tenure at Jones. Jones finished his high school career with a total of 3,102 points.
The ceremony at Jones was attended by all the members of the Cavaliers team despite having lost their game previous night against the Rockets. The team members took an early morning flight to Houston to be present at the occasion. A teary Gibson watched his jersey being raised to the rafters and later, acknowledged the support of LeBrown James along with rest of his teammates.
The Cavaliers picked up the Guard at the 2006 NBA Draft after Gibson had played 2 seasons with his University of Texas team. “That means a lot, that’s the kind of teammates I have. We have a real family atmosphere here. We look out for each other like brothers, so it was great to see them there supporting me,” said an emotional Gibson. Mike Brown, the Cavaliers coach easy agreed to his team members flying off to attending the morning ceremony. “It speaks volumes about how much the guys really like being around each other and how much the guys wanted to support him by going out there. That’s something that you can’t teach or you can’t coach. It usually happens because of the kind of guys you have on your team, and we’re fortunate enough to be that way,” Brown later said.
