The Boston Celtics have signed up Glen Davis, also known as the Big Baby, for a 2-year deal that could see the player earn up to $6 million over the two years. According to sources, Davis picked this deal over a 3-year deal that was offered by the Celtics, instead choosing to become a free agent at the end of the 2010-11 season, his fourth in the NBA. >
Despite speculation that Davis would draw a bigger package, he will only be earning $5 million as the base salary along with an additional $500,000 per season, if he can match certain clauses related to his weight. Filling in for the otherwise irreplaceable Kevin Garnett, Davis was certainly a big money buy but with the state of the current NBA Free Agent market and the tight budgets that teams have enforced, Davis decided to forgo a third year in the contract to become a free agent a whole year before he normally would have had he signed a rookie contract under the NBA regulations. >
The Celtics have been criticized in the past for putting out a team of old guys rather than young players but the pattern seems to be changing. “We’ve got a lot of veterans and we also have a lot of young guys,” general manager Danny Ainge said. “I don’t think we needed to add a bunch of older, aging guys.”
Kevin Garnett was out for the entire playoffs and along with Leon Powe, who was out with a knee injury, and Brian Scalabrine, who suffered multiple concussions, the Celtics were eliminated from the conference semifinals. With the list of injuries piling up, Davis was thrust into the starting lineup and raised his scoring to 15.8 points per game, from just 7.0 points per game till that point. >
“Glen really came into his own last season in the second half when he got a chance to play,” Ainge said. “He wants to play. Just like all young players, he wants a more significant role.”
Rasheed Wallace was the top target for Ainge this year and getting him on a 3-year contract wrapped up the changes wrung in the front court. “We have some guys who are getting up there in age. I think it’s important to surround our Big Three and Rasheed with young guys,” Ainge said. “We feel like we’ve got one of the best front lines in all of basketball. We have six really good basketball players on our front line right now. It’s a long season; we’re going to need all the bodies we can get.”
