ONeal had said that he was initially interested in buying disgraced Robert Sarvers share of the organization but since he found out that Bezos was interested too, ONeal admitted that he does not have what it takes to go head to head in a bidding war against Bezos.
Last month, Sarver announced that he was selling the franchise up for sale after he was handed a year-long ban by the NBA following racist and misogynistic concerns.
An independent report showed that 60-year-old Sarver had used the N-Word multiple times. He was also reported to have made inappropriate comments toward women.
On his The Big Podcast, ONeal talked about his interest in potentially acquiring the Phoenix Suns.
“As a man of faith, I believe in atonement and the path to forgiveness,” Sarver said in a statement. “I expected that the commissioner’s one-year suspension would provide the time for me to focus, make amends and remove my personal controversy from the teams that I and so many fans love.
“But in our current unforgiving climate, it has become painfully clear that that is no longer possible that whatever good I have done, or could still do, is outweighed by things I have said in the past. For those reasons, I am beginning the process of seeking buyers for the Suns and Mercury.”
Other people who are rumored to be interested in acquiring the franchise include Bezos. Elon Musk, and Larry Ellison. After he saw that Bezos was interested, ONeal decided to bow out.
I was open [to the idea of purchasing the team] until I saw the initials JB. Let me tell you something, you dont mess with James Brown, you dont mess with Jeff Bezos, Shaq said.
When the boys come on stage, get your a** and go. So, Jeff said he wants it and a couple of other heavy hitters said they want it. Im not even gonna put my name in the bucket on this one.
Bezos is the former CEO and was the co-founder of Amazon. Odds Sharks released a poll where Bezos sits just under Bob Iger in favorites to become the next Suns’ Owner.
