Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic had a game to forget at the wrong time as Slovenia lost 90-89 to France in the Tokyo 2020 semi-finals on Thursday.

Doncic only managed 16 points, shooting at five-from-18 from the field, as France triumphed after Nicolas Batum’s last-gasp block on Klemen Prepelic’s game-winning shot.

France led by 10 points in the second half but Slovenia rallied, before an unbelievable conclusion, with the winner progressing to face USA in the gold medal match.

Doncic’s shooting wasn’t on, but he still managed a triple-double, with 18 assists and 10 rebounds.

“My shots weren’t falling today so I was trying to find open teammates,” he said.

“We lost the game, so I don’t care about my performance.”

Slovenia star man Doncic, who faced heavy French defence all game, laid off the pass for Prepelic’s final shot, with some onlookers believing he should’ve taken it on himself.

“I think Batum was helping so I had to pass,” he said. “I think he was open and it was a great drive, but Batum had an amazing block.

“I think it was a good choice (to pass). Not always you can make a smart choice but I trust them, they trust me and I thought that was a good choice.”

Nando de Colo top scored with 25 points for France, along with seven rebounds and five assists, while Evan Fournier had 23 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert contributed defensively with 16 rebounds and three assists, along with nine points.

France coach Vincent Collet said his side were excited to play for gold against USA, who they beat in their opening game at Tokyo 2020.

“I think and I hope we will be ready Saturday,” he said. “I know Team USA is favoured, but I hope we will play against them with the same fire and the same energy.

“We know what they are capable of. We will play this final with a lot of confidence.”
