Team USA assistant coach Steve Kerr has hailed star man Kevin Durant as the man to lead his side to another Olympic gold medal at the Tokyo Games.

USA commence their Olympics campaign against France on Sunday, having endured a difficult lead-up in Las Vegas.

The side lost Bradley Beal to health and safety protocol, while Kevin Love was also withdrawn due to injury.

USA also were beaten by Australia and Nigeria in exhibition games before steadying wins over Argentina and Spain.

Nonetheless, Team USA remain hot favourites for the gold medal, particularly boasting a side that includes Devin Booker, Khris Middleton, Damian Lillard and Durant.

The Brooklyn Nets forward was part of the USA side that won gold in 2012 and 2016 and is aiming for a third in Tokyo.

“I just think Kevin is one of the most skilled basketball players in the history of the game,” said Kerr, who worked with Durant at the Golden State Warriors.

“It’s amazing to watch him at 6ft 11in, to see his fluidity on the floor, his footwork, the extension on his jump shot it’s almost impossible to challenge his shot.

“He’s a breathtaking player and that translates to any basketball NBA, FIBA it doesn’t matter, his game is gonna translate.”

Kerr also said the side was feeling for Washington Wizards star Beal, who was ruled out late.

“We all feel terribly for Bradley, who was having a great camp and was so looking forward to playing in the Olympics,” Kerr said.

“To then have that opportunity taken away it’s devastating. But it’s 2021, we’re all sort of used to this by now. You just have to keep pushing forward.”
