The Detroit Shock, coached by NBA great Bill Laimbeer, is trying to win its third championship. They first won in 2003, and did it again in 2006.
The Silver Stars won their first conference title this year, and have never won a championship.
And it doesn’t look like they’re going to be able to do it this year, either, as the Shock are giving them quite a battle.
The Silver Stars were shocked to begin the game, as the Detroit Club took a 19-2 lead after about 6 minutes.
At the end of the first quarter, the score was 25-12.
The Silver Stars battled back in the second quarter, outscoring the Shock by 6, 16-10.
In the third quarter, they outscored the Shock by 4, 17-13, to cut the lead to 48-45.
But then came the fourth quarter and the Shock brought the hammer down, outscoring the Silver Stars by 5, 21-16. The Stars just had no gas left in the tank when it came to pulling out the win.
Katie Smith again led the way for the Shock, scoring 22 points and also dishing out six assists.
Taj McWilliams-Franklin only scored 9 points, but grabbed a few rebounds. As did Deanna Nolan, who only put in 12 points but grabbed 7 defensive rebounds and had 5 assists and 4 steals.
Becky Hammon carried the Silver Stars with 24 points, on 5-13 shooting and 11-12 for free throws.
Ann Wauters put in 13 points, and grabbed 6 rebounds.
Game 3 in the series will take place on Sunday, 4:30 Eastern Time, on ESPN2. The Shock won’t be at home, because of scheduling conflicts, but rather at Eastern Michigan University, in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
